Pinkalicious: The Musical

The pink cupcake craze that is sweeping the nation makes its Portland premiere! Based on the popular book, Pinakalicious: The Musical finds its title character craving anything and everything pink—especially cupcakes! When Pinkalicious eats one too many she turns pink. So pink that even a bath won't wash away the color—which isn't so bad as far as she is concerned. The remedy is a strict green foods diet, but Pinkalicous can't stop thinking about those cupcakes! Think pink is just for girls? Think again, because little brother Peter proves that a pink sweet tooth runs in the family. With Broadway-style show tunes, dancing cupcakes, and a sparkling story, Pinkalicious: The Musical is a treat worth indulging in.

Ms. Frizzle, Wanda, Ralphie, Carlos and the other students at Walkerville Elementary are putting on a play about climate change, and we know what that means…field trip…WAHOO! After 25 years of scientific adventures, the Magic School Bus makes its first ever landing in Portland! The Frizz and her class circle the globe, from Antarctica to the equator, learning about global warming. In classic School Bus style, they start with the big picture, then take a closer look at the reasons the world is getting warmer. It's not all bad news…Ms. Frizzle and kids explore countless easy ways to combat climate change. Science is fun when you take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! Are you up for the climate challenge?


Locomotion

Some days, like today and yesterday and probably
tomorrow— all my missing gets jumbled up inside of me.
Lonnie "Locomotion's" mama named him after the 1970s dance hit, but she isn't around anymore. His teacher, Ms. Marcus, is teaching his class about poetry. And so, as he fills the pages of his notebook with haikus, sonnets, and words-written-quickly-so-that-they-don't-escape, we learn about his foster mother Ms. Edna, his beloved little sister Lili, and the heartbreak of loss. Presented in lyrical spoken word that is both poignant and humorous, Lonnie's story plays out with such vulnerable honesty that your will heart leap with anticipation and joy at every turn.

 

The Storm in the Barn

It's 1937 and the Kansas dust swirls as far as the eye can see. Eleven-year-old Jack and his family struggle to survive the Dust Bowl. With no clouds on the horizon, the future is grim. Bullied, not big enough to work, and a disappointment to his father, Jack feels useless in the face of hardship—until he discovers a sinister figure with a face like a thunderstorm. Is it just "dust dementia?" Or has he found a way to pull the town out of desperation? Both tall tale and thrilling historical fiction, The Storm in the Barn—with music by Portland band, Black Prairie—captures the spare, muted, ethereal mood of the award-wining graphic novel.
